Ferry Accident In NYC

Boat accidents are far more common than you think. Before you get on a boat, be aware of all the potential dangers.

At least 57 people were injured, two of them critically, when a New York-bound ferry crashed into a dock in Lower Manhattan Wednesday, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, which occurred around 8:45 a.m.

Emergency crews carted several passengers on stretchers toward ambulances, and there was a gash on the front of the vessel.

“There was a large jolt,” said passenger Elizabeth Banta. “It felt like we were in a car crash. … Several people were thrown into the air and onto the ground.”

Witnesses said several passengers were waiting at the top of a stairwell aboard the vessel as it approached the dock and were flung off their feet.

“I saw a lot of bleeding heads with white bandages (and) a lot of people strapped to boards,” said Julie Westfall, who witnessed the incident.

The ferry, operated by Seastreak, provides daily service between New Jersey and Pier 11 near Wall Street and carries roughly 400 passengers at a time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those that were injured,” the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with authorities to determine what caused the accident.

Seastreak said that two scheduled trips — the 5:55 p.m. departure from East 35th St. and the 6:10 p.m. departure from Pier 11 — have been canceled as result of the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday it was sending an investigative team to the scene, where at least six emergency vehicles remained late Wednesday morning.

Coast Guard records indicate that the same Seastreak ferry has been involved in prior crashes, including one in 2009 when the vessel slammed into a New Jersey dock and tore a 2- to 3-foot gash in the starboard bow of the vessel.

A year later, a collision with a dock pile punctured a hole in the port side of the same boat.

Wednesday’s crash also drew comparisons to an unrelated 2010 incident when a ferry boat with mechanical problems crashed into the Staten Island Ferry terminal, injuring 36 people.

That ferry, the Andrew J. Barberi, was the same vessel involved in an October 2003 crash that killed 11 people and injured 42, considered one of the worst ferry accidents in the city’s recent history.

If you or a loved one were the victim of a boat accident that was caused by negligence or some other form of reckless behavior, it is important that you contact a committed and dedicated personal injury lawyer to help you decide if you should file a lawsuit. 50 Cent Doing Fine After Car Accident

New York rapper 50 Cent is invincible, immortal and will probably outlive legendary West Coast rapper 2Pac.

That’s good news considering that 50 Cent almost died Tuesday morning when a big rig rear-ended his bulletproof SUV.

The 36-year-old MC was driving along the Long Island Expressway in New York City when the collision occurred. The driver of the other vehicle apparently lost control of the truck and hit 50 Cent’s SUV, nearly flipping it over.

Luckily, 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, survived the collision. He sustained minor neck and back injuries and was transported to New York Hospital Queens. He was released following observation and is reportedly doing fine.

After a troubled youth in South Jamaica Queens where he made his living selling crack, 50 Cent rose to fame in the early 2000s. In 2003, 50 Cent released “Get Rich Or Die Tryin,’” his first album on a major label. Two years later, he released “The Massacre,” which catapulted him to hip hop superstardom.

Not only is he an actor, entrepreneur, investor, producer and rapper, but he founded hip hop label G-Unit Records in 2003. More recently, 50 Cent founded G-Note Records in late 2010 to represent artists from other genres of music.

Life is good for 50 Cent, but it could have turned out differently for him. Back in May of 2000, he was shot nine times while he was sitting in his car outside of his grandmother’s former home in Queens. The gunman fired several rounds and hit 50 Cent on his arm, hand, hip chest, both of his legs and even his left cheek. The gunshot wound to the left side of his face caused some damage to his mouth. The bullet shaved off part of his gums and left a hole between the top and bottom rows of his teeth, causing him to have slurred speech. Not one of those nine gunshot wounds, however, succeeded in bringing him down. The indestructible rapper lived to tell about it.

He spent 13 days in the hospital and endured five months of physical therapy after he was shot in 2000. Early this morning, he spent a few hours in the hospital after his accident before he was discharged. Now 50 Cent can concentrate on what’s really important:  making money and beefing with other rappers.
