Off-Duty Guard Steals From Facebook

It’s not a good idea to steal supplies from your employer. This includes copy paper, stationery and laptops. Companies don’t like it when you steal from them, especially companies like Facebook.

In fact, if you work for Facebook, you should probably be on your best behavior. But some people just don’t have a clue.

An off-duty security guard for Facebook was one of two people arrested after allegedly stealing 49 laptops from the company’s former headquarters in Palo Alto.

Brandon Simon, 20, and Travis Calhoun, 21, both of Sunnyvale, face charges of commercial burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

Simon, the guard, was also arrested on suspicion of embezzlement and resisting arrest. Calhoun faces additional charges of possession of burglary tools and driving with a suspended license.

A private security guard called police about 1:30 a.m. Monday saying two masked men had just broken into the offices at 1050 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto police Agent Marianna Villaescusa said in a statement. The suspects were “removing property” when one made eye contact with the guard and both “immediately fled,” Villaescusa said.

A police sergeant spotted a vehicle nearby matching a description given by the guard, with another vehicle close behind. After stopping the vehicles, officers found “bins of laptop computers” in the vehicle driven by Simon and a stolen license plate and burglary tools in the other, Villaescusa said.

Although Facebook moved its headquarters to Menlo Park last year, it still kept property at the old Palo Alto offices, authorities said. Simon “had knowledge about what property remained inside the building,” Villaescusa said.

He also worked for the same company as the guard who called police, Villaescusa said. Authorities did not reveal the name of the company.

Investigators were also looking into whether the pair had attempted a burglary earlier. Facebook reported finding a broken window pane near an exterior door about 5:20 a.m. Sunday, Villaescusa said, and although no property was taken, Simon and Calhoun entered the building a day later in the same spot.

Darrius Heyward-Bey Out Of The Hospital

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey probably doesn’t remember what hit him on Sunday. He will probably never know who caused his misfortune. Was it the opposing team or the replacement officials?

Heyward-Bey is no longer in the hospital following the brutal hit he took during Sunday’s game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to the team.

Heyward-Bey appeared to be knocked unconscious by a helmet-to-helmet hit delivered by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Mundy, laying motionless for several minutes after the collision.

With the Raiders trying to mount a rally against the Steelers in the fourth quarter, Heyward-Bey stretched out to try and make a catch in the end zone, but was sandwiched between two Pittsburgh defenders. After absorbing the jarring hit from Mundy, Heyward-Bey seemed to be out cold before even hitting the ground.

In a flagrant disregard for the safety of the players, no flag was thrown on the play by the replacement officials.

After trainers attended to Heyward-Bey and put him on a stretcher, he acknowledged the crowd with a thumbs up while getting carted off the field in Oakland. Heyward-Bey was taken to a local hospital for examination and observation.

The Raiders eventually would rally past the visiting Steelers to win 34-31.

Much like Golden Tate’s illegal and vicious block on Dallas linebacker Sean Lee in Week 2, the frightening hit left many speculating on Twitter that the replacement officials were endangering the health of players.

But the issue remains. Are the replacement officials putting professional football players at risk with their lack of experience? Instead of having control of the game, these replacement officials have made bad calls, delayed plays and even caused the wrong team to win.

Because of the incompetence of these replacement officials, the New Orleans Saints lost on Sunday even though they should have won the game. Talk about negligence.

Let’s see what happens tonight. Maybe the real officials will come back and make football more fun and a little more safer.

Santa Ana College Football Will Never Be The Same

Football is a violent sport. Many football players sustain minor injuries. Others sustain catastrophic injuries. A few of them will die. Brandon Brown was one of those players.

With 10 tackles in two seasons, Brown didn’t statistically do much for the Santa Ana College football team.

But that didn’t make him any less a part of the Santa Ana College football program.

And if his death – 1,500 miles away and while playing for another school – is a reminder of anything today, it is this:

Being related is just one of the ways of being family.

Brown, 26, died last weekend in Kansas, his massive body succumbing to injuries inflicted a week earlier in a late-night fight that police continue to investigate. So far, they’ve made one arrest. A 19-year-old.

A defensive lineman from Sacramento, Brown left behind hundreds of questions about what happened that night, dozens of stunned former teammates here and at Tabor College, three hours west of Kansas City, and, saddest of all, two children – a 3-year-old boy and a 7-month-old girl.

On Tuesday, a few blocks from Tabor, there was a memorial service. One of Brown’s Tabor teammates, Josh Murphy, wrote a song to remember him. “Holding Back Tears” was played to accompany a slideshow of Brown’s life.

Back at Santa Ana College, Coach Geoff Jones continues to sort through his own emotions while attempting to read the emotions of his players. There are no X’s and O’s on how to navigate through tragedy.

Brown didn’t play much for the Dons as a freshman. But he was a starter his second season, before blowing out his knee in the third game. That quickly, his career at Santa Ana was over.

In the summer, he transferred to Tabor, where four other former Santa Ana players also began this season. Jones has a picture of a group – dressed in Tabor gear – on his phone.

The last time Jones saw Brown was in July. They parted with a high-five, a half-hug and an understanding that they’d be there for one another.

Ten tackles. That’s not a lot, but, at the same time, that’s everything. That’s enough. Choosing to become part of a team is deciding to become part of something larger, too.

That’s true everywhere, even at places like Santa Ana, a two-year school where they play mostly for fun and the pursuit of an education.

Brown is in the record books here, which means he’s a piece of the school’s forever. And forever lasts a long time, longer even than death.

They’ll remember him around here as a guy who liked to have fun, who jabbered with teammates and made the grinding days of practice slightly less grinding.

His former position coach, Joe Okoturoh, says Brown’s smiling attitude “brought balance” to an otherwise violent, serious sport.

Brown was 6-feet-3, 280 pounds, but he carried with all that mass a personality much lighter.

When the “BB” stickers arrive from Kansas, each Santa Ana College player will place one on his helmet.

Jones recently texted his counterpart at Tabor, a coach named Mike Gardner, a quote from Martin Luther King. It dealt with being strong when facing adversity.

“I know he has to be in a brutal place,” Jones says. “It’s sickening to me and saddening to me. It’s senseless. When you put that much into a person, it hurts even more when you lose them.”

Santa Ana College lost Brandon Brown on Saturday. But, even in death, Brandon Brown will never lose Santa Ana College.

O.C. Driver Sentenced In Hit-And-Run Death

Have you ever come close to running a pedestrian over? Of course, we all have. Imagine for a moment if you had run over a pedestrian, who actually has the right of way, and there are no other cars around. Would you stop? Would you keep going?

Like most law-abiding citizens, you’d probably stop. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of drivers who don’t stop and just keep going.

An Orange County judge sentenced a man on Friday to two years in state prison for leaving the scene after he fatally struck a woman in a Huntington Beach intersection.

He was not blamed for the accident itself.

Jason Michael Roberts, 33, of San Juan Capistrano, who pleaded guilty in May, was sentenced on one felony count of hit-and-run with injury in connection with the July 22, 2011, crash as four friends walked through a crosswalk at Brookhurst Street and Atlanta Avenue after a birthday celebration at a bar.

Oriana Millan, a 24-year-old mother of a now-6-year-old girl, was killed.

Roberts’ Toyota Camry struck Millan and a man who was part of the group in the crosswalk. Millan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man suffered non-fatal injuries.

Roberts fled the scene, driving 12 miles to Laguna Beach before his car broke down because of the impact caused by striking Millan, Deputy District Attorney Troy Pino said.

Roberts had the “moral obligation” to stop and, except for the vehicle breaking down, “he’d be home free,” Pino said.

Roberts initially told Laguna Beach officers that he had struck a deer on Pacific Coast Highway, but authorities said the damage made it obvious he struck a person.

He deserved prison time because he lied to police and his action showed “a degree of callousness,” Superior Court Judge Gary Paer said. But his action did not warrant the maximum four years, the judge added at the hearing.

“There are no winners here,” Paer declared, having said earlier Roberts was not charged with causing the death of Millan, and the case likely would not even be prosecuted had he stopped at the crash scene. Police concluded that Roberts was not at fault in the “tragic accident,” Paer said. “The only crime here is not stopping.”

Millan’s sister-in-law, Lauren Bagosian-Ruvalcaba, told Paer her 6-year-old niece does not want to give away clothes her mother bought for her even though they don’t fit her now. For Christmas last year, the girl put this on her wish list: “I need Santa to bring my mother back.”

Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter May Be Poisoning Your Children

For most people, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are about as American as apple pie. Imagine children across the country opening up their Avengers lunchbox and pulling out a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Many parents feel the lunch favorite is healthy for kids to eat. In fact, many parents go to healthy grocery stores like Trader Joe’s to buy them.

What happens when the healthy store’s house brand is the problem? It’s difficult to imagine, but the evidence is there. Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter has been linked to 29 salmonella cases in 18 states. No deaths have been reported.

As a result, Trader Joe’s is recalling the peanut butter brand that has been linked to 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states in the hope that there are no deaths reported.

The Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the store’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, which is sold nationwide, is the likely source of the outbreak. The agencies are investigating whether any other items sold at the store could be contaminated.

More than three-fourths of those who became ill were children under age 18. Again, no deaths have been reported.

The FDA issued a statement saying that the FDA, the CDC and the state of California briefed Trader Joe’s on its investigation showing the link between the peanut butter and the illnesses The company then agreed to remove the product from store shelves.

The government did not release which states had reported illnesses, but several states have issued warnings to residents not to eat the peanut butter. According to the individual states’ health departments, three cases were in Massachusetts, one was in Rhode Island and one was in North Carolina.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. It is most dangerous to children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.

Celebrities Gone Wild Behind The Wheel

What do Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes all have in common? Aside from being internationally known superstars, they have all been involved in hit-and-run incidents.

Celebrities are brilliant at some things – like driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – but their driving skills leave a little to be desired.

Amanda Bynes might be the latest lady to hit the headlines on account of her negligent driving, but she’s got a long, proud tradition of celebrities who can’t drive behind her. So who else has been unlucky when they’ve rolled the furry dice?

If anyone has seen and done it all by now, it’s Britney Spears. In 2007, Spears was charged with a misdemeanor count of hit and run, according to People magazine. She hit a parked car then left the scene, making no attempt to contact the driver – not even a nice note. She might have got away with it, if the incident wasn’t captured on camera by a celebrity reporter. Britney wasn’t charged, put paid the car’s owner around $1,000 in damages.

Car trouble sometimes befalls the most prestigious actors. In February 2000, Oscar winner Halle Berry drove through a red light – and got charged with a misdemeanor hit and run. Berry crashed into another woman’s car, but didn’t stick around. However, according to People magazine, she reported the accident to the police when she arrived at the hospital. She is believed to have received 22 stitches for a deep cut on her forehead, and was sentenced to 250 hours community service and a three year probationary period. She settled out of court with the driver.

Of course, the queen of car crashes – literal and figurative – is Lindsay Lohan. The star has been in trouble for DUI offences and partying on numerous occasions, and on Wednesday she hit a pedestrian in her car in Manhattan. Insiders believe that she had been drinking, but these reports are unconfirmed.

Lindsay Lohan Tries To One Up Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes’ troubles with the law were so last week. This week Lindsay Lohan tried to best the other actress by behaving badly.

A Manhattan chef who was hit by Lohan claims the Porsche-driving starlet was “slurring” her words and “smelled like alcohol.”

The troubled “Mean Girls” actress was charged with leaving the scene of an accident two hours after the 12:30 a.m. incident in an alley between the Maritime and Dream hotels in Chelsea. She was given a desk appearance ticket and released.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said police don’t think Lohan — a rehab regular who is on probation — was intoxicated, but no Breathalyzer test was performed.

Lohan’s father, Michael, who’s had his own legal problems, defended her.

The driveway where the accident happened serves as the entrance to the Electric Room, an exclusive club inside Dream.

Rodriguez said he had just left Bottega, the restaurant where he works at the adjacent Maritime, and was walking on the underground ramp when he “saw this car come real quick and hit me.”

He said when Lohan emerged from the Porsche Cayenne, “I asked, ‘Why did you do that?’

Rodriguez said one of the men in the car moved Lohan from the driver’s seat into the back and then told him there was “no problem.”

Rodriguez said he didn’t recognize Lohan.

He called 911 and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he said doctors told him he has torn tendons and gave him morphine for the pain.

It’s unclear where Lohan went.

Kelly said she left the scene and cops arrested her when she returned about 2:30 a.m. A rep for the Electric Room said the notorious party girl was not there Wednesday.

In addition to filing a complaint with the police, Rodriguez made an incident report with the Maritime’s garage in which he said “the female appeared disoriented.”

“Mr. Rodriguez took pictures with his cell phone of the vehicle license plate but was prevented from taking pictures of the individuals by Dream Hotel security,” the report says.

Lohan gave police a California address, and the Porsche has Florida plates, but she’s reportedly looking for a pad in Manhattan with her assistant, Gavin Doyle.

But experts say the latest run-in could cause major legal problems for Lohan — who has two DUI convictions on her record and is on probation in connection with a necklace theft.

He said a jail sentence wouldn’t be the typical outcome, but noted that Lindsay’s many scrapes with the law may have exhausted her judge’s patience.

The NFL Hid Brain Injuries From Players

Have you ever wondered why football players wear helmets? The reason is because football is a risky sport that could result in serious brain injuries.

Several former professional football players are suing the NFL. There are more than 3,000 former NFL players who are suing the league for allegedly ignoring evidence of the link between concussions sustained while playing football and long-term brain injuries.

A master complaint combining dozens of existing lawsuits accusing the NFL of failing to provide information linking football-related head trauma to irreparable memory loss, brain damage, and other debilitating long-term health issues was filed in federal court in Philadelphia on Thursday.

The lawsuit names more than 3,000 plaintiffs, according to a legal source with direct knowledge of the situation, with approximately 2,500 players among that total, and the remainder being made up chiefly of players’ wives filing for loss of spousal support.

There were 86 lawsuits filed by more than 2,300 players in the last year, according to a league source, and a judge in Philadelphia was assigned to come up with one complaint.

The master complaint is not a class-action lawsuit, but rather is a standard part of multi-district litigation. Multidistrict litigation allows for the consolidation of lawsuits that have common factual issues, and allows for more efficient handling of pretrial issues, such as discovery requests and pre-trial motions.

The multidistrict litigation allows for separate trials and settlements for the plaintiffs in the different lawsuits, while a class-action lawsuit binds all members of the class to the result of a single trial or settlement. This would allow ex-players suffering to get different rulings or settlements than those who are asymptomatic, and give leeway for the legal system to treat each group of plaintiffs separately.

The court’s schedule provides the league with the opportunity to raise issues with the master complaint by June 19 and set August 19 as the date for the league to file a motion to dismiss the case.

If you or a loved one were the victim of an accident that was caused by negligence or some other form of reckless behavior, it is important that you contact a committed and dedicated personal injury lawyer to help you decide if you should file a lawsuit. Brain Injuries In The NFL

It happens on any given Sunday. Sometimes it happens on Monday or Thursday nights. Two teams of gridiron warriors take to the field and battle one another for glory and victory. It’s a dangerous sport, but someone has to do it.

Unfortunately, several former professional football players are suing the NFL. One of them is Mitch White, a former offensive tackle who was signed to the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but never actually played a regular season game. White is among the more than 3,000 former NFL players who are suing the league for allegedly ignoring evidence of the link between football-related concussions and long-term brain injury.

Neuroscientists have only begun to research and understand the impact of concussions — even seemingly “minor” ones — on the brain, and we will be seeing a string of new studies on this subject in the coming months and years. Just this month, for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that professional football players are three times more likely to die from neurodegenerative brain disorders — including ALS — than the general U.S. population.

The sport had an earlier violence-related crisis. At the turn of the 20th century, football was almost banned as a result of the appalling number of deaths that were occurring on the field — 18 in 1905 alone. Changes to the game, especially the introduction of the forward pass and new safety equipment, saved the sport.

Similar actions to reform football are being discussed today, but many neuroscientists remain skeptical that they will make the game any safer for the brain. Football’s future really lies in the attitudes of families who must weigh the risks and benefits of letting their sons play the game. If families — and their sons — increasingly conclude that the risks are not worth it, football will become as irrelevant as boxing.

And brain injuries aren’t the only problem that football players face. They could also be victims of paralysis. Earlier this month, former Tulane football player Devon Walker sustained a spinal cord injury when he collided with a teammate in a game against Tulsa. He may be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Lindsay Lohan Is Jealous Of Amanda Bynes

Troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan doesn’t understand why cops are giving Amanda Bynes a break. Maybe it’s because Bynes doesn’t quite have a long enough rap sheet.

Lindsay Lohan, who knows her away around the criminal justice system, thinks the cops and prosecutors are going easy on actress Amanda Bynes.

Bynes, the Nickelodeon TV child star turned “Easy A ” actress, was pulled over Sunday by Burbank airport police while driving her BMW. The officer cited Bynes, towed her car and let her go.

At the time of the incident, Bynes was already facing two hit-and-run charges and one of driving under the influence. Her driver’s license was revoked August 25 after the hit-and-run charges.

The fact that Bynes was let go Sunday seemed to irk Lohan, who was arrested and hauled off to jail several times while on supervised probation for five years for a DUI and a subsequent charge of shoplifting jewelry.

“Why did I get put in jail and a nickelodeon star has had NO punishment(s) so far?” Lohan wrote on Twitter.

The tweet was quickly endorsed by some of her 4-million-plus followers on the social network.

Bynes, 25, is facing a drunk-driving charge after hitting a Los Angeles County sheriff’s cruiser April 6 in West Hollywood. After two more charges of hit and run were filed earlier this month, Bynes’ driver’s license was suspended, officials with the state Department of Motor Vehicles said. The charges are in connection with incidents April 10 and Aug. 4.

Lohan’s criticism may be motivated in part by the news that Bynes was pulled over Sept. 9 because her lights were not on. In that incident, Los Angeles police officers never asked for her driver’s license, which had been suspended Aug 25. Driving with a suspended license is against the law.

Then Sunday about 8:20 a.m., airport police pulled Bynes over. But instead of arresting her and taking her into custody, police cited and released her.

“These are the moments that I appreciate, my life experiences, living without regrets and Disney for supporting me as an actress — night all,” Lohan posted on Twitter shortly after her Bynes comment.

Lohan’s career is rebounding after an  L.A. County Superior Court judge ended her supervised probation in March and praised her for completing her community service and ending five years of criminal court appearances that saw her jailed several times.

During Lohan’s lengthy probation stemming from two DUI arrests, she has been repeatedly jailed by judges for various violations, including using drugs and alcohol and failing to perform her required community service at a downtown women’s center.

Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced Lohan to jail and saw her placed under house arrest for her probation violations. Sautner then imposed a strict set of monthly community service and therapy requirements with a warning that the actress would be jailed if she did anything wrong.

Lohan has publicly credited the judge and Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Holley, with helping her rebuild her life and career, which hit rock bottom with the necklace theft conviction.

She recently completed a movie for Lifetime, in which she plays actress Elizabeth Taylor.
