Blind Man Tells A Tale About Driving

DWB – or driving while blind – is illegal in the state of California. Interestingly enough, it’s still possible to get a license to drive if you have some visual impairment. Someone needs to tell the DMV that people with serious visual impairments should not drive. If you have a serious visual impairment and you drive a vehicle, you may cause a fatal car accident.

A 72-year-old lawyer from Pacific Palisades was recently issued a driver’s license. The man is legally blind with 94 percent of his vision gone.

He was the defense attorney for George Russell Weller, the 86-year-old man who plowed through the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market in 2003, leaving 10 people dead and 68 injured. Russell, who was convicted of vehicular manslaughter but didn’t serve time because of failing health, said he had accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes.

Handling the case made the legally blind lawyer give some thought to whether there should be stricter screening of drivers with health- or age-related problems.

Sometimes age has nothing to do with it. Reckless drivers can be young, old and in between.

The legally blind lawyer gave up driving 15 years ago because of his deteriorating vision. But he kept renewing his license by mail for the sake of having a valid ID. Five years ago, when he got a license renewal form, he noticed a portion that asked if he had any visual impairment that would affect his driving.

The next line asked what that might be and he wrote “retinitis pigmentosa.” That’s a progressive condition in which peripheral vision is lost. He has a narrow tunnel of vision, and can see pretty well within that field. But anything to the right or left, up or down, is lost to him. He was more than a little surprised then to get his license in the mail a couple of weeks later.

Blown Tire Could Have Caused Fatal Weekend Crash

Accidents are caused by a variety of factors. The right combination of factors could have deadly results, especially when you’re driving along PCH.

A preliminary investigation into a head-on crash that on Saturday killed one person, injured three others and forced the closure of PCH in Malibu suggests that a blown tire may have started the deadly chain of events.

The 19-year-old driver of a red Ford Explorer told investigators he lost control of the sport-utility vehicle after his right rear tire blew out.

The SUV crossed over into oncoming traffic where it crashed head on into a black Toyota 4Runner, which then spun out and collided with a Lexus.

The victim who died in the accident was a juvenile who had been a passenger in the Ford Explorer. Investigators said the victim and driver had been partying in the area the night before. It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but investigators said they are looking into the possibility.

The crash was at 8:10 a.m. Saturday in an S-curve just east of the Los Angeles County fire battalion headquarters at Carbon Canyon Road. The vehicles came to rest at the western-most intersection of PCH and Rambla Pacifica, which intersects PCH twice.

PCH was reopened around 4 p.m. Saturday, several hours after the crash. The area was cordoned off for the death investigation and to clear wreckage from the road.

There are no other roads along that section of the Malibu coast, which caused massive traffic snarls.

Resident Karen Horner said she was driving back to her home along PCH when she hit the traffic. Authorities told her to park her car and walk home.

During the noon hour, PCH was closed to westbound through traffic at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, although westbound local traffic was allowed as far west as Las Flores Canyon Road.

Earlier in the day, both eastbound and westbound traffic had a firm closure – no vehicles allowed – between Las Flores Canyon and Carbon Canyon roads.

Natina Reed Dead At 32

Most people look back fondly to the music of the 90s, especially grunge. The 90s, however, weren’t just about alternative music. It was also a great time for R&B music. One of the biggest voices of 90s R&B died this weekend.

Blaque’s Natina Reed died tragically in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning in Atlanta, but the singer is being remembered fondly by Kurupt, the father of her son.

Though they never married, Tha Dogg Pound rapper and Reed were engaged in the early 2000s and have a 10-year-old son, Tren Brown, together. Reed, who was crossing a street when she was struck, died two days shy of her 33rd birthday. On Sunday evening (October 28), Kurupt (born Ricardo Emmanuel Brown) expressed his profound loss and extended his gratitude for the outpouring of well-wishes in a statement to MTV News.

Blaque were among a string of girl groups, including 702 and 3LW, that dominated the charts in the late 1990s. But Reed and her groupmates Brandi Williams and Shamari Fears had something of a fairy R&B godmother in TLC megastar Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, who mentored the group and even made cameos in their videos until her own tragic death in April 2002 at age 30. (In an eerie turn, the energetic femcees known to have shared a close bond, fell a decade apart, both in car accidents and right around the same age.)

The trio enjoyed music industry success with singles like the aforementioned “808″ and “Bring It All to Me”; their videos are a veritable time capsule of pre-millennium urban sounds and styles, from mid-riff-baring metallic jumpsuits to platform sneakers. They even took their act to the big screen, playing Compton, California-bred cheerleaders in the 2000 classic “Bring It On.”

Reed’s death prompted eulogizing as news made its way to the Net over the weekend. A distraught Williams posted this message on Twitter: “Last night the world was changed forever, life will never be the same….she was my sister.”

Meanwhile, the trio’s “Bring It On” co-star Grabielle Union was brief but equally poignant, writing, “#RIP #Sad #BringItOn.”

Although earlier reports cited an unidentified hit-and-run driver as culpable in Reed’s death, a Gwinnett County police spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that “as of right now, it does not appear that the driver has any fault in this event,” adding that it he actually contacted police about the accident and wasn’t expected to face any charges. Reed was apparently standing a roadway late Friday night, and officials are seeking assistance from “anyone who might have information about anything that could help us determine why she was there.”

Brian Stow Attends World Series

Last year, he went to see his beloved Giants take on the Dodgers for opening day at Dodger Stadium. The Giants lost that game and so did Brian Stow. His life changed forever when a group of thugs savagely beat him.

Although Stow, who was brutally beaten at Dodger Stadium last year, attended Game 2 of the World Series, his family said he wanted to watch in private and asked that there be no public ceremony.

Thursday night’s game between the Giants and the Tigers in San Francisco is believed to be the first baseball game Stow has attended since the 2011 opening day assault.

Stow, a former paramedic and a father of two, suffered serious head trauma when he was attacked in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium after the opening day game between the Dodgers and Giants in 2011.

Two suspects, Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood, have been ordered to stand trial after a six-day preliminary hearing that included dramatic testimony from witnesses. Among other things, the witnesses recalled the chilling moment when Stow’s skull hit the pavement, and there was a recording of Norwood admitting to his mother that he was “involved” in the beating.

Stow’s family said his recovery has been up and down. The most recent post on the family blog, dated October 9, said: “As always, there are good days and not so good days.”

“His memory is very unpredictable and we don’t know what he will remember and what he won’t,” the family said. “We imagine that this is something that will be a part of his recovery for a long time.”

Diddy Involved In Car Accident

Car accidents occur all the time on the streets of Southern California. At some point in your life, you may experience a car accident. Even celebrities will experience a car accident at some point in their lives. Some celebrities are victims of car accidents, while others cause car accidents.

Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs was in pain after his Cadillac Escalade crashed into another vehicle Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The music mogul’s driver slammed into a Lexus sedan that turned left in front of their black SUV in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Blvd.

No one from either vehicle was hospitalized. Diddy said he would seek his own medical attention but didn’t specify his injuries.

As fans expressed concern for the hip-hop hotshot, Diddy appeared to address the crash on his Twitter account. He even posted pictures of the incident.

Meningitis Breakout

Medical malpractice cases are an unfortunate experience but can happen to anyone. If the case is due to negligence of some sort, it can be considered a legal matter which leads to personal injury.

The widespread meningitis exposure is putting more than 14,000 public members at risk of being infected by the possibly fatal disease.

The cause of the disease is a steroid which was contaminated by a fungus. The steroid was injected to relieve back pain. Now, many people who were exposed must wait to see if they too will be infected with meningitis. As of Monday, 282 people have been infected with the disease and 23 have died in connection with the contaminated drug, produced at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

According to a New York Times article from September,  health officials say the contamination comes from the actual injections and not the clinics where the steroid was administered:

“Health officials emphasized that the problem appeared to come from the medication and not the clinics themselves, and that the clinics had immediately cooperated by notifying patients and, in the case of Saint Thomas, shutting down when the outbreak was recognized. But the officials have released few details about the source of the drug, saying the investigation was continuing.”

Other patients have experienced joint infections after being exposed to the drug, methylprednisolone, which was injected into elbows, knees, shoulders or hips.

In 23 states, three lots of the drug, or more than 17,000 vials, have been shipped from the producer. Despite the widespread infection, the disease is not contagious.

Every single day, the case count rises and experts are working adamantly to determine which of the patients who were exposed may be infected and more likely to contract meningitis.

Medical professionals hope the infection cases will be quickly identified in order to watch their state and administer spinal taps and other tests which will hopefully help to treat the disease early enough to avoid deadly alternatives.

A method will soon be available for doctors to estimate the likelihood of a patient’s risk and to see how aggressively doctors should follow-up with patients, Dr. Marion Kainer of the Tennessee Health Department told The New York Times on Friday.

In Tennessee, where the highest number of cases and deaths has been reported-69 cases and nine deaths as of Saturday-the State Health Department has found some lots of the steroid to be more likely to infect patients than others.

As the medicine becomes older and when given in a higher dose, patients are far more likely to become sick. The fungus multiplies and the medicine becomes riskier as the medicine ages.

If the disease is detected early enough and treatment begins quickly there after, the more likely the treatment will work effectively. Doctors have warned patients to not wait until becoming severely ill but instead to seek treatment and testing immediately if they were exposed.

It remains difficult for doctors to determine whether symptoms are worsening for people who are already experiencing chronic pains. Even worse is the stress factor, which makes it exceedingly difficult for patients to know if their case is worse than before.

The majority of the meningitis cases are being caused by a fungus called Exserohilum, a black mold. The medications which have been administered to ill patients can cause liver and kidney problems, abnormal heart rhythms and hallucinations.

If you or someone you know has been infected, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses in a medical malpractice suit.

Freeways Reopen Following Massive Truck Accidents

Early yesterday morning, nine big rigs collided in two crashes in the tunnels on the truck bypass route in the Newhall Pass. The collisions, tentatively blamed on speeding over what could have been wet roads, occurred on the southbound Golden State Freeway at the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway, with the first reported incident occurring at 3:07 a.m.

While there were minor injuries reported, no one was killed in these incidents.

The southbound truck route at the 5 and 14 Freeway transition roads reopened Tuesday afternoon after two separate collisions caused nine big rig trucks to jackknife, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The first collision involving four trucks occurred around 3 a.m., just north of Edison Road.

The second crash, involving five big rigs, took place a short time later at the north end of the tunnel.

Los Angeles County firefighters freed one big rig driver who was trapped just before 6 a.m. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

At least six heavy duty tow trucks have been ordered to help clear the scene.

The causes of both accidents are under investigation. Officials suspect speed and weather may have been factors because it was raining at the time of the accidents.

Fatal Car Accident Still Haunts Detective

Car accidents are more than just a nuisance. They are traumatic experiences that should never occur. Although car accidents can be unavoidable, they are usually preventable. When car accidents do occur, however, the results can be devastating.

Even though fatality car accidents can be devastating, something good can come always come out of them.

Something about the case struck a nerve in Douglas County Sheriff’s detective Jay Armbrister, a 14-year veteran law enforcement officer, as he arrived on the scene of a drunken driving fatality accident on November 23, 2010.

In one of the cars, four friends had been traveling back to Lincoln, Nebraska, about 3:30 a.m. after seeing a Lawrence concert.

They’d made the right choices that night, with a designated driver behind the wheel of the Mazda 626.

As they drove north on U.S. Highway 24-59, a Toyota Tundra came speeding up behind them.

The driver of the truck, Zachary Harrison, a 22-year-old Air Force airman, had made some poor decisions.

The family of the young man killed that day, the man responsible for his death, and Armbrister have spent the last two years trying to heal and prevent such accidents in the future.

Paul and Shelley Freeman’s 21-year-old son, Cameron, was one of the passengers in the Mazda that morning.

After the accident, Paul said, his family made the decision to seek accountability, but not revenge.

Harrison, stationed in Arkansas but visiting his brother in Lawrence that night, was accused of stealing a newspaper carrier’s truck from Jayhawk Boulevard on the Kansas University campus early that morning and, while traveling at least 78 mph, eventually rammed into the back of the car Cameron was in, killing him and injuring three of his friends.

Harrison’s blood alcohol content after the accident was 0.183, more than twice the legal limit. He pleaded guilty to nine charges, including involuntary manslaughter, drunken driving and three counts of aggravated battery.

When deputies escorted Harrison, who was sentenced to six years in prison for the accident, out of the courtroom, Cameron’s mother, Shelley, told Harrison the family forgave him.

Instead of anger, the family focused their energy on compassion and healing, starting the Cameron Effect, a Web-based initiative that asks people to commit seven acts of kindness. Those who take part post updates to the site, cameroneffect.com.

In what Armbrister calls his “first act of kindness,” he put together a presentation, available on YouTube, about the accident and has traveled to Lincoln to speak to colleges and other schools.

Armbrister said the presentation is his way of sharing tragedies with the broader community in an attempt to prevent accidents.

Armbrister has worked with the Freeman family to coordinate talks in their area and hopes to build on the project with local presentations.

As he was planning his presentation, Armbrister realized there was a missing piece: Harrison.

During his court appearances, Armbrister said he believed Harrison was remorseful and wanted to take responsibility for his actions.

One of the factors Armbrister points to is that Harrison had made some good decisions the evening before the accident, using a designated driver at some point. It still remains unclear how portions of the incident occurred. Harrison blacked out at some point during the evening, and that’s about the best explanation anyone’s received about the incident.

Armbrister wrote Harrison letters in prison after the sentencing. At first, Harrison didn’t respond.

But eventually, the two connected, and Armbrister traveled to the El Dorado Correctional Facility to see Harrison.

They’ve struck up an unusual friendship, and Armbrister sees Harrison’s journey as part of the larger story to Cameron’s death.

Harrison could be released as early as October 2016. When he gets out, Armbrister and Harrison plan to give the presentation together.

Long Beach Transit Bus Collides With Car

Car accidents are traumatic experiences that should never occur. Although car accidents can be unavoidable, they are usually preventable, especially when they involve a car and a bus. When car accidents do occur, however, the results can be devastating.

Ten people sustained moderate injuries Thursday morning after two cars collided in the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Seventh Street, where a city bus had to make an emergency stop.

A late-model Audi, which was traveling westbound on Seventh, reportedly hit a compact Ford vehicle on the passenger side as it was moving southbound, injuring its driver. The driver of that vehicle is an unidentified woman.

The bus was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Audi, jolting many of the passengers.

They were moved to a temporary staging area outside of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at the northwest corner of the intersection.

While awaiting transport to nearby hospitals – Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, St. Mary Medical Center and Pacific Hospital Long Beach – paramedics and other emergency responders provided assistance.

The driver of the bus was also taken to the hospital. The condition of the driver is not known.

One of the injured bus passengers was a wheelchair-bound man. The condition of the passenger is not known.

The compact Ford swerved onto the sidewalk at the southwest corner of Atlantic and stopped near the porch of an apartment building. No one was injured.

One of the passengers called his family on a cell phone and reported that he had sustained a neck injury.
